Sorbitol Liquid

Sorbitol tastes sweet with the properties of crystalline powder, flake or granular as well as colorless liquid. It is easily soluble in water, slightly soluble in methanol, ethanol and acetic acid, absorbs a lot of heat when it dissolves in water, and has the cool taste. Sorbitol has 60% sweet taste and 2/3 calorie as sucrose.

Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol, which the human body metabolizes slowly. It can be obtained by reduction of glucose, changing the aldehyde group to a hydroxyl group. Most Sorbitol is made from corn syrup, but it is also found in apples, pears, peaches, and prunes.

Sorbitol is referred to as a nutritive sweetener because it provides dietary energy: 2.6 kilocalories (11 kilojoules) per gram versus the average 4 kilocalories (17 kilojoules) for carbohydrates. It is often used in diet foods (including diet drinks and ice cream), mints, cough syrups, and sugar-free chewing gum.

1.In Food Industry:

- Sweetener: Sorbitol is widely used as a sweetener in many kinds of food & diet food, including sugar-free candies, gums, frozen desserts, bakery products …etc.

- Sorbitol has moisture and stability, hence it can be added to candies, bakery products and chocolate to avoid the food getting dry and breaking.

2. In Pharmaceutical Industry:

- Cough syrups, mints & diet-free gums.

- Sorbitol is used in bacterial culture media to distinguish the pathogenic Escherichia coli O157:H7 from most other strains of E. coli, as it is usually incapable of fermenting sorbitol, but 93% of known E. coli strains are capable of doing so.

3. In Cosmetics Industry:

Sorbitol is used as a humectant and thickener. Also used in mouthwash and toothpaste.
