Potassium Sorbate

Potassium Sorbate is an organic compound, the molecular formula is C6H7KO2, mainly used as an internationally recognized high efficiency acid preservative, used as food preservative in many of our foods in our daily lives.

Potassium Sorbate is manufactured by neutralizing sorbic acid with Potassium Hydroxide (hydrate), and major components of its production are Crotonaldehyde & Acetic Acid (Please see chart below).

It is a generally safe food additive with a limit of a daily consumption in humans of 0.025–0.1 % in our foods. It is widely used in sausage production, canned foods, beverages, cheese, dairy foods, bakery products, wine, dried fruits …etc.

Potassium Sorbate inhibits molds and yeasts in many foods and hence prolongs their shelf life. It comes in 3 sizes (Granular, Powder & Sphere).

1. In Food Industry:
- Preservative: It inhibits molds and yeasts in many foods and hence prolongs their shelf life.
- It is widely used in sausage production, canned foods, beverages, cheese, dairy foods, bakery products, wine, dried fruits …etc.

2. In Cosmetics Industry:
- Preservative: It is used in many care products to inhibit the development of microorganisms for shelf stability. Some manufacturers use it as a replacement of Parabens.
